Jumilla - Murcia

An important wine growing region with 50 registered wineries, Jumilla is surrounded by endless fields of vineyards. The town is spread out around the base of a castle which presides over the surrounding area. The Church of Santiago in Jumilla is a national monument worth a look with its gothic, renaissance and baroque features. On Easter Tuesday, the Via Crucis in Jumilla is notable for the Christ tied to a column that is carried through the streets.
In the northeast of the Upper Segura Valley, Jumilla is fairly isolated, 45km from Murcia and 55km from Alicante.
Jumilla is largely unfound by the ex pat community. It is still relatively virgin territory. The town itself is undergoing major infra-structural changes to bring it inline with the demands of neighbouring towns that have seen a large increase of poulation in recent years. Luckily, due to the size and location of Jumilla, this will not detract from the beauty of the place. The town centre has all of the modern facilities you would expect from a large town. You will not find any English bars, Full English breakfasts, etc.

The Fiesta de la Vendimia Jumilla, declared of Regional Tourist Interest, were born given the importance that the industry of the wine has had and has for the economy of this Municipality.
What began being a celebration of two days, coincident with the Week of Fair, has become a celebration of two weeks that causes the whole Jumilla to party. The exaltación of the culture of the wine is of manifesto in each one of more than 30 acts than they take place during the creation of wine. Moments like stepping on the grape, cavalcades with the Floats of Vino and offerings from grapes.. The arrival of harvesting time of the grape multiplies the population of this town by four. The fiesta is a spectacle for the senses that makes to the jumillanos feel proud of its earth, and to the visitors to repeat year after year. Celebration: From the 12 to the 17 of August. Very highly recommended.
